Monday Murals: Deanery Way

Deanery Way connects the Merseyway Shopping Centre to Prince's Street.

On the wall of bhs (British Home Stores) are five murals depicting the history of Stockport.

I hadn't been able to obtain further information about these murals, until I posted there here, but see the comment by Dave Williams.

British Home Stores (bhs) was founded in London in 1928. The department store is known for selling clothes and homeware. In 2009 there were 193 stores employing over 17,000 people.

These photographs were taken Monday, 27 September, 2010

A contribution to Monday Murals.

  2. This article on the website of the Public Monuments & Sculpture Association gives brief details of who and what the panels represent. As far as the dates go 1239 appears to be about the date that Stockport was made a 'free borough', and 1260 was when it was given a charter to hold weekly markets and an annual fair. St Mary's Church is the oldest church in Stockport and Richard de Vernon was rector from 1306 to 1334. In 1487 Sir Edmund Shaa (not Richard Shea as the PMSA article says) left money in his will for the founding of Stockport Grammar School - see also the blue plaque in Mottram for his connection with Mottram Church. In 1642 the English Civil War began and I've found that: 'At the start of the Civil War Stockport was garrisoned for Parliament. It was then taken by the Royalists under Prince Rupert in 1644 but was re-occupied by Parliamentary forces in 1645.' Information about Richard Cobden and Samuel Bamford can be found by doing a web search.

  5. Wow, what an incredible series of murals. Love the intricate design and colors. That it presents such a long, local history makes it that much more enchanting. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
