My Stockport Photo of the Year 2015: The River Mersey

The theme for City Daily Photos is Photo of the Year.

My choice for Photo of the Year 2015 is from the 25th April of the river Mersey emerging from under the Bear Pit and an arch of the Wellington Road viaduct into sunshine and flowing towards the railway viaduct.

Reflections of a pigeon

After an afternoon of heavy rain, a pigeon is pecking at puddle outside the Merseyway Shopping Centre.

Another was flying in to see what was to be had.

Reflections on the canal at Woodley

Last week we celebrated our son's 34th birthday and escaped the aftermath of the election by taking a trip down the Peak Forest Canal from Ashton to Romiley aboard Community Spirit, a narrowboat operated by the East Manchester Community Boat Project

Here we are approaching the railway viaduct at Woodley beyond which is the Woodley Tunnel.

You can see a map showing the location of 61 photographs I took that day and view them as a slideshow on Geo-trips.

The Mersey emerges

Having been culverted under the Merseyway Shopping Centre for most of its first mile of life the river Mersey emerges from under the Bear Pit and an arch of the Wellington Road viaduct into sunshine and heads towards the railway viaduct.

For another view and one taken in the opposite direction see the post from 26th May 2013.

Reflections at Mersey Square

Just over a year ago I posted a photograph of Himalayas Tea who had moved into a shop on Mersey Square.

The business has now relocated to Houldsworth Mill in Reddish and these premises are empty at present. The shop window still reflects the railway viaduct across the way and the sky beyond.

Reflections in Heaton Mersey

The windows of the former travel agents on Didsbury Road, Heaton Mersey reflect the Go East restaurant across the road.

Plaza Reflection

The Plaza reflected in a pool of water on the flat roof of the shops by the entrance to the bus station viewed from Wellington Road viaduct.

For information about the Plaza see our post from 30th October 2013 and for a close-up of the sign see the post for 31st October 2013.

Sykes Reservoir, Edgeley

Syke's #2 Reservoir is the middle of three reservoirs originally providing water for the Sykes Bleaching Works. It is now part of Alexandra Park, Edgeley and used for fishing.

I posted a 2009 view of it in September 2013.

Stockport College: Phase 1 building

Designed by architects Austin-Smith:Lord and completed in 2010, this new building on Wellington Road South is part of the Phase 1 development of the college.

"Phase 1 provides Stockport College with new, state of the art workshop accommodation as part of a multi-phase redevelopment strategy that encompassed the entire city centre campus. To maximise built accommodation on this relatively small site the buildings front the edges of the site around a central service yard, incorporating plant space, classroom accommodation, specialist workshops, cafeteria and changing facilities.

Bold cantilevered forms are used to maximise the floor space above ground floor and allow access into the adjacent street whilst opening up routes through the campus. The blocks are clad in a limited palette of robust materials to reflect their workshop use and create a commanding presence along a major route in to the centre of Stockport. Anthra zinc and precast concrete provide solidity, whilst long elevations of glass channels provide abundant, glare free natural light."

See the architect's website for more photographs.

Reflections at the Triangle Church.

A further follow up to Tuesday's post about the Triangle Church.

This is looking across Sandy Lane and the current roadworks from outside McDonalds and the trees which are reflected in the windows.

Yesterday I posted the view from the opposite direction looking up Clarendon Street from behind the church.

Bottom Lock Bridge

Following on from our recent photograph of Engineer Wharf viewed from a train on the railway viaduct between Romiley and Marple, is Bottom Lock Change Bridge.

From here the Peak Forest Canal, having been carried over the valley of the river Goyt on an aqueduct, progresses through the Marple Locks, a series of 16 locks and one of the steepest flights in the country.

Note: this photograph was taken in 2009.

Entry to Stockport Parish Church

Entry to the Parish Church of "St Mary's in the Market Place" is through the Great West Doors which stand underneath the tower. The main body of the church dates from 1817, although parts date back to the 14th century. Through the left hand side of the modern glass door can be seen the East window.

The Packhorse Inn can be seen reflected in the right hand side.

This photograph was taken on Christmas Eve 2011.

Since then the Packhorse Inn has changed to become the Cocked Hat and on January 4th I posted a photo of one the church windows reflected in the pub window.

The Orange Goyt

On Tuesday morning someone tweeted "Why is the Goyt orange this morning?"

A few hours later I took this photo of the river looking upstream from Howard Street bridge. I haven't discovered the reason for the colouration, but it looks like a seepage of iron-ore into the river.

Downstream of the bridge the Goyt flows over a weir and the river Tame joins it from underneath the M60 motorway to form the river Mersey. Note the darker colour of the emerging, converging Tame.

This is a closer view of the water flower over the weir from the other direction. I'll post some more photographs from this point tomorrow.

Himalayas Tea

The former carpet shop next to Superdrug on Mersey Square is now the home of Himalayas Tea which formerly operated from a shop in Middle Hillgate. The railway viaduct is reflected in the window, the gantries interweaving with the Christmas lights.

Looking out from inside both the Wellington Road viaduct and the railway viaduct can be clearly seen.

My tea was 100% caffeine free Earl Grey and the cake was made from a blend of teas and marzipan (no sugar).

Find out more about Himalayas Tea by visiting their website.
