Horse on Manchester Road, Cheadle

Having photographed the George & Dragon last week in Cheadle, I spotted this horse being led along Manchester Road past a used-car showroom.

Looking down at the M60 & A560

I was standing on the bridge on Wellington Road North looking over on to the roads below.

On the left is the M60 Manchester Orbital Motorway. This section was built in the 1980s as the M63 extension from Cheadle Heath to Portwood. The concrete wall is where the former Cheshire Lines railway through Stockport Tiviot Dale used to run.

On the right is Great Egerton Street, the A560 which was once an important East–West link but with the advent of the M56/M60/M67 it is now reduced to catering for local traffic plus a considerable number of motorway link roads.

The shadow of the fence on Wellington Road North also crosses the roads and on the right is my own shadow looking over making it my camera-shy self portrait which is the theme for April 1st at the City Daily Photoblog Community.

N is for Norbury Street

Viewed from one of the carparks overlooking Piccadilly towards Wellington Street South.

On the left is Stopford House which contains various departments belonging to Stockport MBC.

The 24 hour car park on the right is operated by SIP (Simple Intelligent Parking) who also operate a car park in Hyde - see their Contractual Notice.

Tiviot Way Bridge

This modern bridge takes Tiviot Way, the A626 Heaton Chapel to Dinting Junction road, over Penny Lane.

Penny Lane is cut off for through traffic just below the bridge to prevent it being used as a rat-run for drivers trying to avoid the main road from Reddish to Lancashire Hill.

A full account of the route of the A626 is on the Sabre website.

Norbury Viaduct & Bridges

This bridge over Macclesfield Road leads on to the Norbury viaduct. Just beyond the bridge on the left is the terminus of the 192 bus service to Manchester. It carries over nine million passengers each year, and is considered by many to be the busiest bus route in the country - see Wikipedia.

Established under the arches of the viaduct since 1982 is the used-car salerooms of the Midland Garage.

The viaduct was built by the Midland Railway as part of the New Mills to Heaton Mersey line, which formed part of its main line between Manchester Central and London St Pancras.

At the end of the viaduct is the bridge over the A6, Buxton Road.

Like all railway bridges in the UK it carries a notice detailing who to contact in the event of any damage caused to the bridge by striking vehicles.

Texting at the traffic lights

The lights at the bottom of Lancashire Hill were on red. I was on a bus, waiting to alight at the next stop, when I spotted this lady using her mobile phone and I couldn't resist using mine to take her photograph. Using a mobile phone when driving (even if stationary in traffic) is illegal in the UK. I didn't note her registration number so can't actually report her.

Box Junction on Wellington Road South

The junction of Station Road with Wellington Road South is a box junction.

A box junction is a traffic control measure designed to prevent gridlock at busy road junctions. The surface of the junction is marked with a criss-cross grid of diagonal yellow painted lines and vehicles may not enter the area so marked unless their exit from the junction is clear; drivers may enter the box and wait when they want to turn right and are stopped from doing so only by oncoming traffic or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.

Across on the corner of Wellington Road South and Wellington Street is the Unity Inn, a former Robinson's pub now, like many others, closed, stripped of its signage and awaiting an uncertain future.
