Woodley Methodist Church

The original Primitive Methodist Church in Woodley was built in 1868. It was replaced by this modern building in the 21st century.

My thanks go to Mark Bradshaw for this photograph of the original church in 1996 and for the one below which shows Woodley Methodist church with Woodley British School behind and what would be Bankfield Road School to the right of the Methodist Chapel which was on Chapel Street.

Here is a link to the Church website.

  1. Ah Gerald, I believe that Methodist Church buildings look the same the world over! In South Africa all the original Methodist churches look like your photo from 1868 and the modern ones like the 1996 building. Amazing. Greetings Jo, East Africa/

  2. what i find interesting overseas your churches are pretty small in tighter spaces, more unique ... here in the US we build on & make them so darn huge. no style at times. i prefer your side of the world .. it has more style or neatness. ( :

  3. Call me old fashion, but I vote in favor of the original church. Tom The Backroads Traveller

  4. The new looks more practical, but lacks the style of the original. Interesting photos.

  5. I think the former version has character, but the new version is interesting.

  6. I must say that I like the new building better, but I wish they copied the details around the old windows.

  7. The newer church is pretty in its own way. Of course I like the old one, too. Thanks for sharing.

  8. All very well saying that the old church looked better but the building became unsuitable for modern day forms of worship, disabled access, maintainence and financing.
