Stockport Shuttle at Stockport Station

Since 9th January, the section of Station Road in front of the railway station has been closed to traffic as work on the Stockport Exchange Masterplan continues and the site's hoarding line is extended across the road. This stage of works will run from January to July 2016. During this time, vehicles from the A6 can only to get to the station via Railway Road. A new temporary pull in / turning area with a bus stop and taxi rank has been created for passengers at the end of Railway Road between the station and the Multi Storey Car Park.

The #300 Stockport Shuttle is a free bus that takes a circuitous route around the town. It is a good way to get from the railway station to the bus station but less useful in the opposite direction.

Bus Shelter, Bull's Head, Reddish

This bus shelter is the terminus of the #84 bus at the Bull's Head, Reddish. The #84 route is a mainly half hourly service to Manchester Piccadilly. It takes a circuitous route through Heaton Chapel, Heaton Mersey, East Didsbury, Withington, West Didsbury, Chorlton and Old Trafford. The full journey takes over 1 hour 20 minutes. If you just wanted to get from North Reddish to Piccadilly you would cross the road and take the #203 which would get you there in 15-25 minutes depending on traffic. It is probably a route that has been cobbled together from three different original services.

Works on Bridgefield Street

Various works seem to be going on in and around Bridgefield Street with parts of the car park being closed. There are cones and fences on the pavement. On the right is the ramp from the car park leading to the rooftop car park above Debenhams.

At the other end of the street the bus shelter has disappeared and everyone waiting for a bus is having to stand.

Across the road they are erecting a "Cycle Hub".

Stockport's landmark railway viaduct

Stockport railway viaduct is a landmark structure. This first view is from the M60 motorway Eastbound looking South towards the viaduct; the motorway itself is elevated so it is nearly level with the roofs of buildings that nestle under the viaduct's archways.

The viaduct was built in 1839/40 by the engineer George Watson Buck under the architect John Lowe.

This view is taken from outside the bus station. The motorway is somewhere near the farthest arch to be seen in this photograph. Note how it towers over the double-decker buses in the garage.

This view is from the other side above Daw Bank near to where it reaches Stockport Station.

In 1887-89 it was widened to four tracks, 27 arches, 111 feet high and 1786 feet long, comprising 11 million bricks.

This is the view across the bus station from Wellington Road viaduct.

A bus in Mersey Square

A few days ago I showed you the blue sky over Mersey Square.

Here is another photograph from the same day featuring a blue-faced bus in Mersey Square, the 317 service from Ashton under Lyne via Denton, Dane Bank and Reddish.

Bridgefield Street Bus Stop: Looking Out

A dozen or so different services stop on Bridgefield Street, so it is important to look out for the right bus.

Of course, some people may be looking out for something else.

From Viaduct to Viaduct

This photograph was taken Saturday, 25 July, 2009 from aboard a train on the railway viaduct approaching the station. It offers a clear view across the bus station of the less iconic viaduct that carries the A6 across the valley.

Nine arches can be seen here. On the far left it crosses the river Mersey which has just emerged from under the Merseyway Shopping Centre by the bear pit. Steps from the bus station lead up to Wellington Road North.

Through the middle arch is Chestergate and beyond a new bridge that goes from St Petersgate to the carpark on top of the shopping centre. Just beyond is the tower of St Mary's church and in the background stretch the Pennine hills.

On the far right is the Hat Museum.
